This is the whole build of File upload, in the order it was written: the file fields of a form, where the field itself carries the upload. Three made-up companies ask for three documents each, and in each the file travels its own way: Freight's truck drives it across the field, Tower's crane lays it block by block, Vault's coin rolls it into a lock. Each stage below is a live page you can use: choose a file of your own, drop one on a field, or drag a sample. The code under each heading is only what that stage adds; the finished source is at the end.
Three files do the work from the start: index.html for the page and the form, style.css
for the tokens and the layout, and app.js for the behaviour. From stage 3 there is spring.js,
and from stage 5 riders.js. There is no library and no build step. Unless you set a server's address,
nothing is sent anywhere: the upload is simulated.
1 · The frame, an empty form and three companies
The first stage is the whole page in a 432 × 768 frame that app.js scales to fit the screen; add
?full=1 and the same markup is a real page at the size of your window. The form has a head that says who
is asking and for what, three file fields, and a button. Here the form is written by hand, for Freight.
<form class="form" aria-labelledby="up-co" novalidate>

<div class="who"><p class="co" id="up-co">Northline Freight</p><p class="job">Shipment NL-48210 · customs</p></div>

A field is the part that matters. It is a real <input type="file">, so the keyboard, screen
readers and the file picker all work as they should. The input itself is hidden visually but kept in the page, and two
labels point at it: the field's name above the box, and the whole box (a button and the line "or drop it here"). Press
anywhere on the box and the browser opens the file picker; no script is needed for that. The box also already holds
everything it will show later: the riders' layer, the percentage, the "done" row with the file's name, Retry and a ×.
The hint and the message line are tied to the input with aria-describedby, so a screen reader reads what
the field takes and what happened to the file.

Every colour, radius and shadow comes from a CSS variable, in three layers. At the bottom are the primitives: values with no meaning, one ramp per company.

On top are the semantic tokens: what a value is for. The page, the card, the box, the accent, done and failed
get their own names, and a whole set is written once per company on [data-look]. Three companies ship
from the first stage, and each is its own post: Freight (a logistics firm at night: asphalt, sodium light, hazard
yellow, a wide industrial face), Tower (an architecture studio by day: concrete paper, a drawing grid, a gold
hand) and Vault (a private bank: deep green, brass, a serif). Here is Freight.

2 · A field: the real input, checking a file
The hand-written field moves into a <template>: markup the browser parses but never shows, ready
to be cloned. Every part is there, empty.
<!-- one file field; app.js names it and gives it its rider -->
<template id="field">
<div class="field" data-state="empty">

</div>
</template>
What changes from company to company is one table: who is asking and for what, its mark, the types it takes and its size limit, the hint, its three fields and the words on its button. Here is Freight's.
freight: {
name: 'Northline Freight', job: 'Shipment NL-48210 · customs', mark: 'M12 2.5 3.5 20.5 12 16l8.5 4.5z',
types: ['pdf', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'png'], max: 25, hint: 'PDF or JPG · up to 25 MB', send: 'Send to customs',
fields: ['Commercial invoice', 'Packing list', 'Waybill'],
},
Before a file goes anywhere it is checked, and if something is wrong the field says what: not "invalid file"
but "setup.exe isn't a PDF, JPG, PNG file" or "plans.pdf is 240 MB · the limit is 200 MB". The accept
attribute only steers the file picker (a user can still pick "All files", and a dropped file ignores it), so the check
is the real gate.
const extOf = (name) => (name.includes('.') ? name.split('.').pop().toLowerCase() : '').slice(0, 4);
function size(bytes) {
if (bytes < 1024) return `${bytes} B`;
if (bytes < MB) return `${Math.round(bytes / 1024)} KB`;
return `${(bytes / MB).toFixed(bytes < 10 * MB ? 1 : 0)} MB`;
}
// what is wrong with a file, if anything: it stays out, and the field says why
function check(name, bytes) {
if (!COMPANY.types.includes(extOf(name))) return `${name} isn't a ${COMPANY.types.filter((t) => t !== 'jpeg').map((t) => t.toUpperCase()).join(', ')} file`;
if (bytes > COMPANY.max * MB) return `${name} is ${size(bytes)} · the limit is ${COMPANY.max} MB`;
return '';
}
Each field is a clone of the template, with everything named: the input gets an id, both labels point at it, the
hint and the message get ids the input is described by, the input's accept is written from the table, and
the × and Retry get labels that say which field they belong to. Choosing a file fires the input's
change.
const fields = COMPANY.fields.map((label, i) => {
const el = $('#field').content.firstElementChild.cloneNode(true), id = `file-${i}`;
const f = { i, el, box: $('.box', el), input: $('.f-input', el), msg: $('.f-msg', el), state: 'empty' };
f.input.id = id;
f.input.accept = COMPANY.types.map((t) => `.${t}`).join(',');
f.input.setAttribute('aria-describedby', `${id}-hint ${id}-msg`);
$('.f-label', el).htmlFor = id;
$('.f-label', el).textContent = label;
$('.pick', el).htmlFor = id;
$('.f-hint', el).id = `${id}-hint`;
$('.f-hint', el).textContent = COMPANY.hint;
f.msg.id = `${id}-msg`;
$('.x', el).setAttribute('aria-label', `Remove the file from ${label}`);
$('.retry', el).setAttribute('aria-label', `Retry the upload for ${label}`);
f.input.addEventListener('change', () => { if (f.input.files[0]) choose(f, f.input.files[0]); });
$('.x', el).addEventListener('click', () => clear(f));
$('.fields').append(el);
return f;
});
choose() is where every file comes in. A file that fails the check shakes the box (the class is taken
off and put back, with a forced reflow in between, so the animation runs again on a second try) and empties the input.
A file that passes is simply in for now: the field shows its name and size. Stage 4 uploads it from this same place.
// src: the File that was chosen (stage 3 adds dropped files and the samples)
function choose(f, src) {
const why = check(src.name, src.size);
if (why) { // turned away: the field shakes and says why
f.msg.textContent = f.state === 'empty' ? why : `${why} · kept ${f.name}`;
f.el.classList.remove('is-turned'); void f.el.offsetWidth; f.el.classList.add('is-turned');
f.input.value = '';
return;
}
Object.assign(f, { name: src.name, size: src.size, ext: extOf(src.name), file: src,
state: 'done' }); // until stage 4 uploads it, a file that passes is simply in
$('.g-name', f.el).textContent = f.name;
$('.g-size', f.el).textContent = size(f.size);
f.el.classList.remove('is-turned');
f.msg.textContent = `${f.name} chosen`;
show(f);
}
Remove empties the field and puts the focus back on the input, so a keyboard user can choose again straight away instead of starting from the top of the page.
function clear(f) {
Object.assign(f, { state: 'empty', name: '' });
f.input.value = '';
f.msg.textContent = '';

3 · Dropping, and the sample files
A field also takes a file dropped on it. While a file is held over the box it lights up. The catch is that
dragenter and dragleave fire for every child the pointer crosses, so the field counts them and
only lets go of the light when the count is back to zero. The window also cancels drops of its own, so a file dropped
beside a field doesn't open in the tab and throw the form away.
const hasFiles = (e) => [...(e.dataTransfer?.types || [])].includes('Files');
const setOver = (f, on) => { if (f.over !== on) { f.over = on; f.box.toggleAttribute('data-over', on); wake(); } };
for (const f of fields) {
let depth = 0; // dragenter and dragleave fire for every child: count them
f.box.addEventListener('dragenter', (e) => { if (hasFiles(e)) { e.preventDefault(); depth++; setOver(f, true); } });
f.box.addEventListener('dragover', (e) => { if (hasFiles(e)) { e.preventDefault(); e.dataTransfer.dropEffect = 'copy'; } });
f.box.addEventListener('dragleave', () => { if (--depth <= 0) { depth = 0; setOver(f, false); } });
f.box.addEventListener('drop', (e) => { e.preventDefault(); depth = 0; setOver(f, false); if (e.dataTransfer.files[0]) choose(f, e.dataTransfer.files[0]); });
}
// a file dropped beside a field shouldn't open in the tab
addEventListener('dragover', (e) => e.preventDefault());
addEventListener('drop', (e) => e.preventDefault());
Above the form go three sample files, one per field, so the component can be tried without hunting for a PDF. Press one and it goes into its field; drag it and a card lifts off the chip and follows the pointer. That card is the first thing on the page that moves, so here comes the spring: a value with a target, a velocity, a stiffness and a damping, stepped in fixed slices of 1/240 s so it moves the same at 60 and 120 frames a second.
// A spring, written from scratch: a mass on a spring with a damper.
// acceleration = stiffness × (target − value) − damping × velocity
// It is stepped in small fixed slices (1/240 s), so it moves the same on a 60 Hz and a 120 Hz screen.
// Changing the target never moves the value: an interrupted animation just bends towards the new target.
class Spring {
constructor(value = 0, { stiffness = 170, damping = 26 } = {}) {
this.value = value;
this.target = value;
this.velocity = 0;
this.stiffness = stiffness;
this.damping = damping;
}
set(options) { Object.assign(this, options); return this; }
step(dt) {
const slice = 1 / 240;
for (let t = dt; t > 0; t -= slice) {
const h = Math.min(slice, t);
const acceleration = this.stiffness * (this.target - this.value) - this.damping * this.velocity;
this.velocity += acceleration * h;
this.value += this.velocity * h;
}
return this.value;
}
resting(epsilon = 0.01) {
return Math.abs(this.target - this.value) < epsilon && Math.abs(this.velocity) < epsilon * 10;
}
}
With prefers-reduced-motion every spring is critically damped: it still arrives, it just never
overshoots.
// With reduced motion every spring is critically damped: things still arrive, they just don't bounce.
const spring = (stiffness, damping) => ({ stiffness, damping: calm ? 2 * Math.sqrt(stiffness) : damping });
const critical = (stiffness) => ({ stiffness, damping: 2 * Math.sqrt(stiffness) });
The card has five springs: its position (stiff, so it stays close behind the pointer), its tilt (the horizontal speed, so it leans into the way you move), its scale and its opacity.
// the sample files: press one and it goes into its own field; drag it and a card follows the pointer (a spring behind

A chip is a real button. The drag uses pointer events with the pointer captured, so it keeps following outside the chip; it only starts after 5 px, so a press is still a press, and the click that follows a drag is ignored. 4 · The transport: simulated, or a real XMLHttpRequest
Now the file goes up. With no server the field simulates the network, so the demo runs anywhere. Set
ENDPOINT to your server's URL and a real file is sent with XMLHttpRequest: fetch()
still can't report how much of an upload has been sent, while xhr.upload.onprogress can. The sample files
have no bytes, so they are always simulated.
// With no endpoint the field simulates the network, so the demo works anywhere. Set ENDPOINT to your server's URL and
// each real file is sent with XMLHttpRequest, whose upload.onprogress moves the same rider.
const ENDPOINT = null;
function begin(f) {
f.started = clock;
if (!ENDPOINT || !f.file) { f.simulated = true; return; }
f.simulated = false;
const xhr = (f.xhr = new XMLHttpRequest());
xhr.upload.onprogress = (e) => { if (e.lengthComputable) f.loaded = (e.loaded / e.total) * f.size; wake(); };
xhr.onload = () => (xhr.status < 300 ? finish(f) : fail(f, `The server said ${xhr.status}`));
xhr.onerror = () => fail(f, 'Connection lost');
const body = new FormData();
body.append('file', f.file);
xhr.open('POST', ENDPOINT);
xhr.send(body);
}
function stop(f) { if (f.xhr) { f.xhr.abort(); f.xhr = null; } }
The simulation is meant to feel like a network: a slow first half second, a wobble, and bigger files take longer
(the time grows with the logarithm of the size, as real uploads roughly do once the connection is up). A sample can be
set to fail part way, at failAt; it fails once, so Retry gets through.
// a believable network: a slow first half second, a wobble, bigger files take longer
function simulate(f, dt) {
const seconds = 1.6 + 0.6 * Math.log2(1 + f.size / MB);
const warm = Math.min(1, (clock - f.started) / 0.5);
const wobble = 0.75 + 0.5 * (0.5 + 0.5 * Math.sin(clock * 2.3 + f.i * 1.7));
f.loaded = Math.min(f.size, f.loaded + (f.size / seconds) * dt * wobble * (0.35 + 0.65 * warm));
if (f.failAt && f.loaded >= f.size * f.failAt) { f.loaded = f.size * f.failAt; f.failAt = 0; fail(f, 'Connection lost'); }
else if (f.loaded >= f.size) finish(f);
}
The end of an upload is one of three things. Finished: everything is loaded. Failed: the field turns red, says why and how far it got. Retried: it carries on from there.
function finish(f) { f.loaded = f.size; f.uploaded = true; f.xhr = null; wake(); }
function fail(f, why) { f.state = 'error'; f.reason = why; f.xhr = null; f.msg.textContent = `${why} · stopped at ${Math.floor((f.loaded / f.size) * 100)}%`; wake(); }
function retry(f) { f.state = 'busy'; f.msg.textContent = `Uploading ${f.name}…`; begin(f); wake(); }
choose() now resets the field and calls begin() in place of showing the file at once.
stop(f);
if (f.sample) f.sample.classList.remove('is-out');
Object.assign(f, { name: src.name, size: src.size, ext: extOf(src.name), file: src instanceof File ? src : null, sample: src.sample || null,
failAt: src.failAt || 0, loaded: 0, uploaded: false, state: 'busy', reason: '' });
f.sample?.classList.add('is-out');
f.k.value = f.k.target = 0;
f.arrive.value = f.arrive.target = 0;
$('.g-name', f.el).textContent = f.name;
$('.g-size', f.el).textContent = size(f.size);
f.el.classList.remove('is-turned');
f.msg.textContent = `Uploading ${f.name}…`;
begin(f);
wake();
Every frame, paint() draws each field. The progress goes through a spring, so the number counts up
smoothly even when the network delivers it in lumps. The field is "done" only once the spring has made it to the top,
not when the last byte left, so the number never jumps from 70% to the file. The state goes on the element as
data-state, and the stylesheet does the rest: the button and its line fade, the percentage shows, a failed
box turns red and shows Retry. aria-busy tells a screen reader the field is working, and the message line
announces the start, a failure and the end.
function paint(f, dt) {
if (f.state === 'busy' || f.state === 'error') f.k.target = f.size ? f.loaded / f.size : Number(f.uploaded); // an empty file is up at once

5 · The riders: truck, crane, coin
Now the field carries the file. Each company has a rider, drawn into the field's .ride layer.
riders.js defines them all with one small interface: a rider gets its layer and the spring helpers, and
returns label(ext) and frame(s), which is called every frame with the progress, the state, the
field's size and the time. Everything a rider does is worked out from those numbers, so it follows the upload, stops
when it fails and goes back to the start when the field is emptied.
// The riders: what carries a file across its field while it uploads. Each company has one, drawn in the field's .ride
// layer and moved from the upload's progress. A rider is RIDERS.name(ride, { ext, spring, critical, calm }) and returns
// { frame(s), label(ext), resting() }, where s = {
// k: the upload's progress 0–1 (smoothed) state: 'empty' | 'busy' | 'error' | 'done'
// over: a file is being dragged over the field arrive: 0–1, the bow it takes once the file is up
// w, h: the field's size in px dt: seconds since the last frame t: the studio clock in seconds }
// The percentage sits at the field's right (PCT px), so a rider stops short of it.
window.RIDERS = {};
Freight: a flatbed truck carries the file's crate, its type stamped on a label. Its x is a spring after the progress, it bobs a little with its speed, its wheels turn with the distance, its headlight goes ahead of it, and the road behind it fills yellow. A failure stops it with the hazard lights blinking; at 100% it drives off the right edge, on exactly the arrive curve. A file held over an empty field makes it nose in from the left.
const x = new Spring(-80, spring(170, 24));
return {
label(ext) { tag.textContent = ext.toUpperCase(); },
resting: () => x.resting(0.05),
frame({ k, state, over, arrive, w, h, dt, t }) {

wheels.forEach((el, i) => el.setAttribute('transform', `rotate(${((x.value / 3.6) * 57.3).toFixed(1)} ${[9, 18, 47, 57][i]} 26)`));

haz.setAttribute('opacity', state === 'error' ? (Math.sin(t * 9) > 0 ? 1 : 0.1) : 0.25);
},
Tower: the progress is turned into blocks. The whole blocks are laid in a row along the field's floor, and the fraction of the next one is the crane's job: the hanging block comes down from the jib on an ease-in-out and lands as the row grows by one. A failure leaves the block swinging and the lamp flashing; at 100% a gold flag goes up on the last block and the crane rolls away.
frame({ k, state, over, arrive, w, h, dt, t }) {
const run = w - INSET - PCT - 30, laid = state === 'empty' ? 0 : k * run;

Vault: a coin stamped with the bank's V rolls along (its rotation is its distance over its radius, so it never slides) and leaves a bar of gold behind. A failure rocks it on the spot and turns the lock red; at 100% it rolls into the lock, shrinks into it, and the shackle snaps shut on a stiff spring as the lock turns green.
frame({ k, state, over, arrive, w, h, dt, t }) {

In app.js the field gets its rider when it is made, and a ResizeObserver keeps the field's
size, so a rider fits the box at any width.
f.rider = RIDERS[look]($('.ride', el), { spring, critical, calm });
new ResizeObserver(() => { f.w = f.box.clientWidth; f.h = f.box.clientHeight; }).observe(f.box);
Done now waits for the rider's bow: when the progress reaches the top, the arrive spring runs from 0 to
1, the rider drives off, raises its flag or drops into the lock, and the file's row only shows once it is nearly there.
function paint(f, dt, t) {

6 · The form's state, and the post
The last stage makes the fields a form. A small pill in the head counts them ("2 of 3 uploaded", "Upload stopped",
"Sent"), and is a status, so a screen reader hears it change. The button waits until all three are up.
function tell() {
const done = fields.filter((f) => f.state === 'done').length;

const all = done === fields.length;

}
form.addEventListener('submit', (e) => { // in a real form the uploaded files' ids would go with it
e.preventDefault();
sent = true;
$('.send span').textContent = COMPANY.sent;
wake();
});
And it becomes the page that was posted. Each company is its own post in the series, with its own number, name and line in the title.
// each company is its own post in the series: its number, its name and its line in the title
const [num, name, hint] = {

Three companies, three riders
The companies share the markup, the script and the three token layers; each is a block of semantic tokens, a row of the company table and its rider. Here are Tower and Vault.

Make it yours
- Companies are tokens, one row of the company table and a rider: pick one with
?look=freight,towerorvault(ora,b,c).?full=1shows the real page at the size of your window. - A real server is one line: set
ENDPOINTand every real file is posted asmultipart/form-dataunder the namefile, with its progress moving the rider. In a real form your server would answer with an id for each file, and the form would send those ids. - Your own fields and limits are the table: the types, the size limit, the hint and the fields. The check always runs in the page; check again on the server, which is the only check that counts.
- Your own rider is a function that draws into
.rideand returnslabel()andframe(); the progress, the state and the field's size are all it needs. - Accessibility is already there: real file inputs with real labels, the hint and the message tied to each
input, a reason for every file that stays out, a busy field marked
aria-busy, a message line and a form state that are announced, real buttons for Retry, × and sending, the focus back on the input after a remove, andprefers-reduced-motion.
Keep the real input and dress the field, not the
other way round. The <input type="file"> and its labels give you the picker, the keyboard and the
screen reader for free; everything else (the drop, the samples, the rider) only calls the same
choose(), and the field shows its state through one data-state.
